Hurckman Mechanical Celebrates 2 Million Hours Worked Without a Lost Time Incident

Hurckman Mechanical Industries (HMI), a leader in mechanical contracting across Wisconsin, has reached a significant safety milestone: 2 million consecutive work hours without a lost time incident, a feat that took over six years to accomplish. “Zero lost time” means employees have not experienced any injuries or illnesses that result in them missing work.

“This kind of milestone is rare in our industry,” said Safety Director Cory Delwiche. “It shows that the safety culture we’ve built works. When workers go home safe to their families every night, that’s the only reward that really matters.”

HMI’s Experience Modification Rate (EMR) currently stands at 0.68 (as of July 11, 2025), well below the industry average. Their Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is just 0.46, which Delwiche describes as “phenomenal” for a medium-sized contractor with operations in HVAC, piping, fabrication, mechanical and industrial services.

“Safety wins us work,” said Delwiche. “We’ve been awarded multi-million dollar bids—even when we weren’t the lowest bidder—because general contractors know they can trust us to keep their sites safe.”

Behind the numbers is a system that combines technology, training, communication and trust. Every foreman receives daily Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) forms, weekly Toolbox Talks with key reminders and ongoing training. The company partners with Packer Fastener for all protection and PPE to ensure no one is ever short on safety equipment.

“Safety has always been one of our business foundations,” said Jake Warden, President of HMI. “We invest in our workers and their gear to keep them safe.”

Delwiche added, “We tell our team: do what you say you’re going to do. With safety as a core value, we practice what we preach. That promise-keeping builds the kind of trust where employees call me with concerns. It’s not about policing. Safety here is about being a teacher. And I do a lot of listening.”

HMI has never received an OSHA citation and plans to join the Wisconsin SHARP (Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program) this fall—an elite program for companies with exemplary safety records.

And with this achievement, they’re setting their sights even higher.

“We’re going for 2.5 million hours next—and we’ll have an even bigger party,” Delwiche said with a smile. “But the real reward is making sure no one gets hurt. That’s our why.”

Dr. Elizabeth Dickson Michelson, MD, and BayCare Clinic providers to lead industry-related activities

Aurora BayCare Medical Center is joining forces to host the YWCA TechGYRLS event for all girls ages 8 to 18 on Tuesday, July 29.

This hands-on adventure, which takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 PM, is all about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). The program aims to empower young girls—especially those from underrepresented communities—to dive into exciting careers in these fields.

At the event, gynecologic oncologist Dr. Elizabeth Dickson Michelson and other BayCare Clinic providers and staff will offer various hands-on demonstrations and giveaways for participants.

“This program offers us a chance to inspire the next generation of girls and young women in science, math, technology and the arts,” said Dr. Dickson Michelson. “We’re grateful to support these students in our community and to help spark an interest that can lead to successful career pathways.”

The YWCA teams up with local organizations and businesses to create highly engaging field visits led by successful women in STEAM-related industries. Each visit is packed with hands-on learning opportunities. This free event features suture stations, math and art activities, snacks and more.

Engaging in STEAM subjects and activities is particularly valuable for girls, as studies show they begin to lose confidence in their skills and abilities as early as age eight. STEAM subjects also help build vital problem-solving skills that students need as they advance their education and enter careers.

“Seeing women working successfully in STEAM-related fields—and enjoying what they do—can be highly empowering for girls,” Dr. Dickson Michelson said. “We’re proud to be a part of this valuable program.”

Departments participating in the program include Aurora BayCare Gynecologic Oncology, Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine, BayCare Clinic Emergency Physicians, BayCare Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Oral Surgery & Implant Specialists BayCare Clinic, Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic, and plastic surgery product maker Stryker.

All girls ages 8 to 18 are invited to attend this free program. Students ages 8 to 15 need to be accompanied by an adult. The event is at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, 1160 Kepler Dr., 2nd floor, Green Bay. Please RSVP by emailing Jessica.Winkel@baycareclinic.com with your name, your child’s name, and child’s age.

Goodwill NCW Winner of 2025 USA TODAY Top Workplaces Award

Goodwill North Central Wisconsin (NCW) is proud to announce that it has earned the prestigious 2025 USA TODAY Top Workplaces award. The award honors organizations with 150 or more employees that have created exceptional, people-first cultures. This year, more than 42,000 organizations were invited to participate. The winners are recognized for their commitment to fostering a workplace environment that values employee listening and engagement.

The winners are determined by authentic employee feedback captured through a confidential survey conducted by Energage, the HR research and technology company behind the Top Workplaces program since 2006. The results are calculated based on employee responses to statements about Workplace Experience Themes, which are proven indicators of high performance. One highlight from the survey shows Goodwill NCW with a 79% Overall Workplace Experience Score.  This score summarizes an organization’s workplace culture.

This award joins two additional awards earned by Goodwill NCW:

  • Northeast Wisconsin Top Workplaces 2025 Award – First Place (Large business).
  • 2025 Top Leadership Award in Northeast Wisconsin: Chris Hess – Large Business Category.
  • 2025 Top Workplaces Industry Award. (Celebrates organizations that have built people-first workplace cultures within their sector (nonprofit). The award marks them as an employer of choice for those seeking employment in the nonprofit industry).

“We are proud that our team members have validated what we strive for – a workplace where people feel valued, inspired by our leadership, and deeply connected to our mission,” Chris Hess, President and CEO at Goodwill NCW said. “We are honored to receive these awards and grateful to our team, whose collaboration and dedication create an exceptional workplace culture every single day.”

Recently, at the Northeast Wisconsin Top Workplaces awards ceremony, Goodwill NCW learned they captured first place for Top Workplace in the “Large Business” category based solely on team member feedback. Goodwill NCW President and CEO Chris Hess was also presented the “Leadership” award for the Large Business category.

“Earning a Top Workplaces award is a badge of honor for companies, especially because it comes authentically from their employees,” said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. “That’s something to be proud of. In today’s market, leaders must ensure they’re allowing employees to have a voice and be heard. That’s paramount. Top Workplaces do this, and it pays dividends.”

Port of Green Bay Shares June Tonnage

The Port of Green Bay saw 137,725 tons of material and raw goods pass through the port during June, compared to 123,794 tons during the the month of May. Current year-to-date totals are down 47% compared to the same time frame last season.

“While the season’s slow start is still affecting the year’s overall totals, the Port gained some momentum with shipments of cement, limestone and petroleum products this past month,” shared Dean Haen, Port of Green Bay Director. “So far this season, we’ve seen lower volumes of key commodities due to surges in these materials at the end of last season, disrupted supply chain patterns and moderated demand. With the length of the season, our expectation is to see 1.75 million tons by early next year.”

Three commodities that moved through the Port last month, including limestone (68,241 tons), cement (46,703 tons) and petroleum products (22,781 tons). A total of 15 total ships visited during June, compared to 10 ships during the May. This season, a total to 32 total vessels have visited the Port of Green Bay.

“The increased ship traffic over last month is a positive indicator of stakeholder engagement and impact amidst commodity groups, working to support our economy here in Northeast Wisconsin,” added Haen. “The Port is an economic driver throughout the region, from employment opportunities to giving businesses efficient access to raw materials and a reliable link in the supply chain. The Port remains committed to our region’s economy.”

Back in Green Bay, the airport is fully prepared to welcome increased air traffic. GRB’s Fixed Based Operator (FBO) partners Jet Air Group and AvFlight Green Bay are staffed and ready to handle the more than 400 aircraft expected to arrive at GRB throughout the week. Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach added that EAA AirVenture brings significant economic impact to our region. “Every year, this event fills our hotels, boosts activity at restaurants and supports local retailers, he explains. “GRB serves as a critical gateway for that growth by driving tourism and commerce and we look forward an exciting, fun-filled family event this year.”
