September 3 Hugo (Martin Scorsese, USA 2011)
Orphaned and alone except for an uncle, Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) lives in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo’s job is to oil and maintain the station’s clocks, but to him, his more important task is to protect a broken automaton and notebook left to him by his late father (Jude Law). Accompanied by the goddaughter (Chloë Grace Moretz) of an embittered toy merchant (Ben Kingsley), Hugo embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of the automaton and find a place he can call home. Presented by Prof. Carol Emmons, UW-Green Bay.

October 1 Being Thunder (USA 2021) Sherenté, a Two Spirit Genderqueer teenager from Rhode Island’s Narragansett tribe performs in dance competitions at annual regional powwows of New England tribes. There is no formal rule which prohibits Two Spirit Genderqueer people from competing in a category different from their birth gender. But behind the scenes, tribal leaders manipulate Sherenté’s scores or disqualify them outright because of their belief in traditional binary gender roles. Blindsided by ongoing dishonesty and deception, Sherenté continues to perform in spite of insensitive behavior by tribal leaders and others in their community. Co-sponsored by The Bay Area Council On Gender Diversity and moderated by Martha Marvel with a panel discussion at the conclusion of the film.

But when Filomena — who has now become Domenico’s kept woman and has secretly borne his children — learns that her lover is planning to wed another, she stops at nothing to hook him into marrying her instead. Based on the diaries of Adèle Hugo (Isabelle Adjani), daughter of renowned French writer Victor Hugo, who falls in love with British soldier Albert Pinson (Bruce Robinson) while living in exile off the coast of England.
