The Tactile Exhibition, “SEven Art Movements”, Opens in the Mulva Cultural Center Atrium
“Seven Art Movements,” a tactile exhibition that uses the senses of touch and sound to help people who are blind or have low vision experience art, opens in the Mulva Cultural Center Atrium on November 19. This exhibition is free and open to the public.
Through replica works that include “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch and “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci, visitors can learn about the artistic evolution of seven of the most influential art movements in history: the Renaissance, the Baroque, neoclassicism, impressionism, post-impressionism, art nouveau, and expressionism.
“Seven Art Movements” seeks to illustrate the distinct and defining characteristics of each period—its subject matter, craftsmanship, and style—presented chronologically beginning in the 16th century.
The exhibition features 3D imagery, braille text and embedded sensors that provide a customized, touch-activated audio narrative. This multisensory experience invites all visitors to engage with art on a deeper level while offering people who are blind or have low vision a unique opportunity to experience these timeless masterpieces.
“Tactile images are a way to bring art to multiple senses,” said Claudia Damiani, Director of Exhibits & Education at Mulva Cultural Center. “This allows everybody to experience art in an inclusive, meaningful and immersive way.”
