Inclusion in Leadership

AJ Walker - Police Lieutenant for University Police UWGB

In honor of Black History Month, the Greater Green Bay Chamber is putting a spotlight on Black owned businesses and offering ways to support them in a blog miniseries. Today, AJ Walker with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Police Department shares his thoughts on inclusion in leadership.

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
I am AJ Walker. I serve as the police lieutenant for University Police here at UWGB. We are a full-time police department with eleven full-time officers, three part-time officers, four student workers, and one administrative assistant. I run patrol operations and the administrative functions within the department, such as training, records, and community policing. I formerly worked for the City of Green Bay Police Department as a School Resource Officer before moving over to UWGB.

How would you describe your leadership style?
Leadership is a journey. I draw my leadership style from experiential learning derived intently from the styles and philosophies of great leaders who have preceded me. While in the US Army, I learned to lead from the front by being an expert in my field and training future leaders to a military standard. As I have aged, I have learned that I still need to be an expert; however, I must allow others to lead. Understanding this dynamic has allowed me to transition to a more defined support role, enabling my officers’ professional development and maturation. My goal is to prepare my replacement for the nuances of leading within the policing profession.

What principles do you rely on as a police officer, and how does your unique background influence your interactions with the community?
When I took over as a School Resource Officer, I realized I was the first Black person to hold such a role in the City of Green Bay. I made it this far by adhering to four unique principles: trust your ability to speak, be informed, pause and think, and be humble. Being the only Black officer working in schools gave me perspective as countless children of all ethnicities and races gravitated toward me because I came with different experiences and hopes for their success. Growing up as a Black man in America, alongside some hard, uncompromising work ethic, shaped who I am.

Why is creating an inclusive environment important in the workplace?
Over the years, I’ve come to understand that effective problem-solving often hinges on grasping the complexity and nuances of various viewpoints. An inclusive workplace facilitates nuanced problem-solving from diverse perspectives. Agreement isn’t always necessary to drive progress; instead, collaborative approaches are vital for supporting the growth of both the company and the community. In the policing world, we serve everyone. I serve everyone, and that means understanding how to bring solutions. Inclusivity can help with that.

How can community leaders promote inclusion, and how can the broader community offer support?
Opportunity. That’s it. Several years ago, I joined the Leadership Green Bay Class of 2021. The chance to learn and connect with local leaders, subject matter experts, and community members has broadened my perspective on effecting change within our community. As a police officer, I seek solutions beyond my profession and strive to give back to our community. I also recognize the significance of forging coalitions to bolster student success in northeast Wisconsin. Leadership Green Bay and CYP are great starting points for generational opportunity and change.

Is there anything special you do to celebrate Black History Month?
Recently, I was asked to serve as a staff advisor for a student organization. The Men of Color Alliance (MOCA) serves three roles: to give male students of color a space to converse, to support student success through access to resources, and to provide an introduction to community networking. As I power through my doctoral program, I see an increasing need to dive deep into how we support men of color as they persist through their educational journey. These young people are my life’s work.

Urban Cultural Arts & Event Center

In honor of Black History Month, the Greater Green Bay Chamber is putting a spotlight on Black owned businesses and offering ways to support them in a blog miniseries. Today, we highlight Latosha Greenleaf, Executive Director of Urban Cultural Arts & Event Center. Learn more about her business and her journey as a business owner by reading her answers to the questions below.

What motivated you to open your own business?
The motivating factor in opening an art focused community center was my strong belief in the healing power of artistic expression and its amazing benefits for our community. Art is not just about creating beautiful things, it has the potential to bring about positive changes in people’s lives. I am particularly passionate about how art can be a significant source of support for our youth, children with disabilities, and older individuals, both mentally and physically. For our youth, engaging in artistic activities can be a powerful outlet for self-expression. For children with disabilities, art provides a unique avenue for communication and self-discovery, contributing to their overall development and for older individuals, artistic expression can be a source of joy. Art and being creative in general have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and depression. It promotes mental well-being and offers a creative outlet that benefits us physically and emotionally. Urban Cultural Arts is not just a business venture for me, it’s a mission. The mission to provide a safe and entertaining space where art is not only accessible, but affordable for the families in our community and where art has no mental, physical or financial barriers.

What challenges have you faced/adversity have you overcome as a business owner?
I’ve encountered various challenges that required resilience and a lot of problem-solving. The most difficult was navigating through the initial stages of establishing the business, dealing with securing funding, and ensuring compliance with regulations. I am still focusing on overcoming these challenges by careful planning, seeking advice from mentors, and adapting to unforeseen circumstances. Another obstacle was building awareness and attracting community participation. This requires persistence and creativity to overcome the initial skepticism and encourage people to embrace the center as a valuable community asset. It also required finding alternative revenue streams, and maintaining open communication with staff and the community while navigating through these adversities.

What are you the proudest of from your time as a business owner?
I take pride in my determination as a business owner, especially during tough times. Despite facing numerous setbacks, including the heartbreaking loss of my partner, big brother and best friend Thom E BHoy to suicide, and the challenges of managing a dynamic team where people come and go, I have not given up. The ability to weather such emotional and professional storms showcases a deep commitment to the vision we had community center. Even when overwhelmed and overworked, I remained steadfast, driven by a passion for creating a space where art thrives and the community flourishes. My proudest achievement is not just about the success of the business but about the unwavering dedication to its mission despite adversity. It reflects a commitment to making a positive impact on the community through the transformative power of art, even when faced with life’s most difficult challenges.

How do you honor Black creators in our community through your work?
We pay tribute to Black creators through education and artistic workshops based on their inventions. We Also celebrate their contributions with cultural awareness events incorporating poetry, art, food, and dance to make it interesting and get the community involved.

What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
The advice that I would give to aspiring entrepreneurs is to prioritize what matters to you, stay focused, plan meticulously, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Educate yourself continually and stay adaptable to change. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your goals and values. Minimize distractions and prioritize your mental health. While entrepreneurship is challenging, remember to prioritize self-care and family above all.

What impacts do you want your work to have on future generations?
I want my work to have an everlasting positive impact on future generations. I hope to inspire creativity, create a sense of unity, and promote inclusivity within the community. I want future generations to view the center as a vibrant hub where diverse voices are heard, artistic expressions are celebrated, and connections are forged. I hope that Urban Cultural Arts becomes a catalyst for positive social change for many years to follow. Whether through showcasing diverse perspectives in art, supporting local talent, or providing educational opportunities, I want our impact to ripple through generations, leaving a legacy of creativity, empathy, and community engagement. Ultimately, I envision a future where the seeds we plant today grow into a flourishing cultural and artistic landscape for the benefit of generations to come.

Latosha Greenleaf with customers

Is there anything special you do to celebrate Black History Month either personally or at your business?
Certainly, as a Black woman with Black children, and given the context of our community where our history is sometimes overlooked, it’s crucial for me to actively engage in teaching our youth about our heritage both at home and within the broader community. Specifically, during Black History Month, we organize special events, educational programs and workshops to highlight the contributions and struggles of the Black community. However, it’s equally important to emphasize that our commitment to cultural celebration extends beyond February. Throughout the entire year, we make it a priority to commemorate the diverse cultures our community proudly represents. This ensures that the recognition and appreciation of our collective history and heritage are continuous, fostering a sense of inclusivity and respect for cultural diversity. How Breakthrough Drives Real Emissions Reduction Progress

Breakthrough, a Green Bay-based strategic transportation management company, is on the path toward being carbon neutral and encouraging companies across the globe to follow its lead.

In 2019, Breakthrough embarked on a digital transformation with a primary goal of shifting their products to the cloud. Additional value that came out of this project was moving away from high energy-consuming data centers. This move was the first of many that led to Breakthrough becoming carbon neutral in 2022.

Since achieving this milestone, Breakthrough launched two solutions for companies seeking to decarbonize their own operations: CleanMile and ZeroMe.

You Can Track Scope 3 Emissions

CleanMile is the first end-to-end transportation emissions management solution that enables companies to track, plan and execute scope 1 & 3 transportation emissions reduction initiatives. With scope 3 emissions typically comprising 80 to 90% of a company’s entire carbon footprint – and often the most difficult to track and manage – the transportation emissions management tool combines smart technology, robust data, and expert support to enable companies to make real progress toward their emissions reduction targets or goals.

CleanMile is accredited by Smart Freight Centre (SFC) in conformance with the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) framework. Designed to inform business decisions and steer efforts to reduce emissions, SFC’s GLEC framework is the only globally recognized methodology for harmonized calculation and reporting of the logistics GHG footprint across the multi-modal supply chain. CleanMile was also recognized as a sustainable service award by SEAL (Sustainability, Environmental Achievement & Leadership) Awards in 2023. CleanMile collects, analyzes, and mobilizes load-level transportation data to establish an emissions baseline, recommend reduction initiatives, and take action

Sustainability is a Team Effort

In November 2022, Breakthrough, in partnership with parent company U.S. Venture, internally launched ZeroMe, a sustainability engagement application, which helps employees track their carbon footprint and learn about company-led sustainability initiatives. ZeroMe offers companies an effective way to prove culture and value claims about sustainability at an enterprise level – including scope 3 emissions.

Breakthrough Inspires Real Change

Breakthrough continues to develop new, innovative ways to reduce emissions across organizations and supply chains. With a dedicated team of sustainability and data analysts proactively monitoring the progress of ESG policies and emerging sustainability developments, Breakthrough has the resources and infrastructure needed to adapt and generate tangible market insights to make emissions reduction progress. To learn more about Breakthrough, visit BreakthroughFuel.com.

About Breakthrough
